Online Testing Accommodations

These are online testing accommodations available for South Carolina assessments. These accommodations MUST be marked in the Portal BEFORE a student begins testing. 

For the SC READY & EOCEP assessments please consult with the Test Administrator Manual if a student starts testing without an online accommodation. 

For BEACON only, if a student starts testing without an online accommodation, the school will need to apply the accommodation(s) on the student’s profile then place the student into a new registration.

Oral Administration (N/A for SC READY ELA gr 3 & BEACON K-2)

  •  SC READY & EOCEP
    • The student has audio from the online test read aloud in real time. Schools must supply headphones for students using this accommodation.
      • Includes test items and passages
  • BEACON
    • The student has audio from the online test read aloud in real time. Schools must supply headphones for students using this accommodation.
      • Includes test items only

Oral Administration Writing Only (SC READY ELA gr 4-8 & EOCEP English 2 only)

  • SC READY & EOCEP
    • The student has audio from the online test read aloud in real time for Writing Only. Schools must supply headphones for students using this accommodation.
      • Includes test items and passages

Oral Administration Reading Only/Part A Only (SCR ELA gr 4-8 & English 2 only)

  • SC READY & EOCEP
    • The student has audio from the online test read aloud in real time for Reading Only. Schools must supply headphones for students using this accommodation.
      • Includes test items and passages

Oral Administration Reading Part B Only (SC READY ELA gr 4-5)

  • SC READY
    • This is only used for grade 4-5 students who need the reading portion of the ELA test read aloud in real time.
    • MUST be paired with the Oral Administration Reading Only/Part A Only (SCR ELA gr 4-8 & English 2 only) Accommodation.
    • The student has audio from the online test read aloud in real time for Reading Only. Schools must supply headphones for
      students using this accommodation.

Oral Administration Items & Passages (BEACON ELA 3-8 only)

  • BEACON
    • The student has audio from the online test read aloud in real time. Schools must supply headphones for students using this accommodation.
      • Includes test items and passages

Paper Test Transcription

  • SC READY & EOCEP
    • The student tests using a large print, braille, or paper test book, but the student’s responses are transcribed into an online test.
  • BEACON
    • The student tests using a paper braille test book, but the student’s responses are transcribed into an online test.

Sign Language Video (N/A for SC READY ELA gr 3, BEACON 3-8 ELA, BEACON K-2)

  • All Assessments
    • The student has the online test signed to them in American Sign Language (ASL) during testing.

Permissive Mode (Requires SCDE approval)

  • MAAP
    • The student tests using a permissive mode browser that allows non-embedded speech-to-text and eye tracking technology to run in tandem in a secure environment with the DRC INSIGHT Online Test Engine.

Mixed Mode Testing (SC READY ELA gr 3-4 only)

  • SC READY
    • For ELA Grade 3 & 4 ONLY. Student tests online for all ELA test questions except for the TDW item, which they respond to on paper.

HVA (BEACON K-2 only)

  • BEACON
    • The student has audio from the online test read aloud in real time. Students in grades K-2 will automatically have this applied to their testing profile. Schools must supply headphones for students.
      • Includes Items and Passages for Grade K-1
      • Includes Items only for Grade 2
    • NOTE:
      • While DRC BEACON Early Years is designed for K-2, the literacy screening component will also be available in grade 3 as the ELA Assessment, FOLA, RAN are completed. Grade 3 would use the Oral Administration accommodation for audio support on ELA Assessment since they will not have access to HVA. 
      • Oral Administration and HVA are not compatible. If a Grade K-2 student with the HVA accommodation marked has their grade level modified to 3, this will cause issues with audio playback on that student’s test. Oral Administration should be added before adding the student into a registration.
