COS Installation

Last Updated on June 24, 2026

The COS Installation sections provide guidance on installing, updating, and maintaining COS on supported operating systems. It is intended for system administrators and technical staff responsible for device setup and software management.

These topics focus on installation procedures, update behavior, and operating system–specific considerations for COS Service Devices and related systems. For an overview of COS architecture and component roles, see the COS System Overview.

Software Installation and Update Rights

Certain software rights are required to install and update DRC INSIGHT and the COS – SD software depending upon the type of operating system you are using. The COS – SD software requires Administrator rights to install it.

COS Version 10 for macOS and Windows

All supported versions of macOS and Windows may require additional manual steps due to security updates to the COS maintenance tool. If you are completing a fresh installation – not trying to update from version 9 to 10 – you should not need to complete the additional steps unless you receive an error. If you encounter an error in the maintenance tool, you must clear the local cache in order to update to Version 10 of the COS – SD software.

Windows Software Updates

Automatic updates were reinstated for Windows devices beginning with version 15 of the DRC INSIGHT application.

To ensure that the DRC INSIGHT software automatically updates the Testing Devices, use the COS interface to select Enable Auto Update during the configuration process (see COS – SD Windows Installation).

  • If the Auto Update feature is enabled, the software checks the version each time DRC INSIGHT is launched and provides the option to install any software updates. DRC strongly recommends that the Auto Update feature be enabled.
  • If the Auto Update feature is not enabled, the software checks the version each time DRC INSIGHT is launched.
    • When a tester attempts to log in to a test, the tester is notified that they do not have the latest version of the software and cannot continue.
    • Site personnel must either update the software manually by downloading the latest version from the WIDA AMS Portal and reinstalling it or change the COS Configuration setting to allow automatic updates and restart DRC INSIGHT (see COS – SD Windows Installation). Update your software before testing begins to avoid delays.
